Sweden Let the People Run @sweden
Events such as the Arab Spring have shown the democratic power of Twitter. Sweden however have taken things one step further by allowing the Swedish people to run the official Swedish Twitter account - @sweden.
In a ground breaking move the Swedish government will grant control of the account to one Swedish citizen each week. They can tweet about whatever they like. The idea is part of a new project called Curators of Sweden.
“No one owns the brand of Sweden more than its people. With this initiative we let them show their Sweden to the world,” says Thomas Brühl, CEO of VisitSweden, the tourism ministry that had previously been managing the account since it was created in 2009.
The project revolves around the notion that Sweden cannot be represented by a lone voice, therefore a better job would be done if as many people became involved as possible.
The first Swede to run the @sweden account is Jack Wermer, a writer and marketer, who began his turn on the 10th December.
“I’ve always enjoyed to show tourists my Sweden and to be able to do it on Twitter feels like a fun and natural step,” Werner says.
VisitSweden will choose people to run the account that represent the nations skills and values. These will include fashion, design and innovation. In the coming weeks people such as a writer, a priest, a teacher and a lesbian trucker are expected to man the account.
How would you like to run the Twitter account for your country? What would you say if given the chance?
