Supermarket Tesco has released its new free online TV and film service called Clubcard TV exclusively for its Clubcard customers entering a competitive online streaming content space.

Tesco becomes the first UK retailer to reward its customers with a streaming TV and movie service, a collaborative venture between Tesco Clubcard and blinkbox (Tesco acquired 80 percent of the streaming content provider in 2011).

To join Clubcard TV, users need to be a Clubcard holder through Tesco, in which they can then use their 16-digit card number to register with the new service along with their name, date of birth and postcode.

The new streaming service states it will offer free content including comedy, drama, entertainment, film and kids television to Clubcard holders without downloads, subscriptions or contracts.

In entering the streaming content arena, Tesco instantly meets strong and established competitors such as BBC iPlayer, BSkyB, BT Vision, Netflix, Lovefilm, YouTube, YouView and Virgin Media and  all vying for consumers attention. Tesco has its work cut out given its competitors are accessible by smartphones and/or tablets whereas Clubcard TV is currently only available via Mac and PC browsers. It will strive to set itself apart from other on demand film and TV sites Netflix and Lovefilm as it is totally free, and vows to remain so.

The service is currently being trialled by Tesco staff where only Priviledgecards can be accepted. It’s not known exactly when the service will be fully available to Tesco Clubcard holders (at the time of writing).
