If you’re new to working with symbols in Adobe Illustrator, read “Using Adobe Illustrator - Creating Symbols 101: Part 1” before doing this tutorial.

The Symbol Sizer grows or shrinks symbol instances.

How to use the Symbol Sizer:

1. Click any symbol in the symbol set to select the entire set. In this case, you can click any snowflake:

2. Do either one of two things:

A) Click and hold or drag on the Symbol Sprayer tool, or whatever tool is in its place, and select “Symbol Sizer” in the pulldown menu:

B) Double-click the Symbol Sprayer tool, click on the Symbol Sizer tool in the Symbolism Tools Options box, then click OK:

3. Grow or shrink the symbols.

To grow a symbol instance:

1. Place your symbol sprayer cursor over any symbol instance:

2. With your symbol sprayer cursor, click or drag this symbol instance. The longer your mouse button is down, the bigger it will get:

To shrink a symbol instance:

1. Place your symbol sprayer cursor over any symbol instance:

2. With your symbol sprayer cursor, hold down the Option/Alt key and click or drag this symbol instance. The longer your mouse button is down, the smaller it will get:

If you look at the Symbolism Tools Options Box, you will see two checked - or unchecked features under the Symbol Sizer tool: the Proportional Resizing box and the Resizing Affects Density box:

If there is no checkmark in the Proportional Resizing box, you can click and drag on any symbol instance to resize either its X or Y axis, depending on which director you drag your cursor. If you just click on the instance, it won't do anything.

If there is no checkmark in the Resizing Affects Density box, you can resize any symbol instances without "moving" the symbol instances around it.
