Yo Ho Ho Ho, A Wi-Fi Life For Me
I'm doing it. It's really happening. Since I'm a big time blogger and all, you obviously read my article Data Dealers Indubitably Duping Us and saw my musings on leaving behind Big Cell for a phone powered purely by Wi-Fi. No, I'm not a broke college kid: I'm 29, and my salary is pretty decent. So why do this? I ask: WHY NOT? The insatiable need to experiment with my tech beckoned me to try a stupid thing like this. It's my lame, geek version of a Jackass bit, but I won't end up getting my nuts crushed by the buck of a bull or hurled out of a shopping cart in the process.
I had my fancy for tech finagling tickled recently when I got an older Lenovo desktop in my possession. After getting some additional memory, a new Wi-Fi receiver and a Windows 7 upgrade, old girl had some years added to her life. With that catalyst, I'm now moving boldly into that cheapskate, rebellious territory of a Wi-Fi only "phone." However...
I'm not cancelling AT&T just yet as I previously threatened in my earlier post. Let's be honest: if I do find this transition incredibly difficult, I will need to keep my account in order to revert. So, instead, I'm activating call forwarding to my Skype number, which I will access from the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 (that's Sammy's answer to the iPod Touch if you aren't aware). The Nokia Lumia 900 I had since mid-April was sent packing via eBay, so even if I do end up reverting, it won't be until I get an actual cellular device again. Which brings me to this: I need a new phone! I'm hoping the "new iPhone" or whatever Apple calls it is as good as the rumor mill suggests when it goes to market in late September (allegedly). If so, I will likely nab one and perhaps put the bright blue shackles of AT&T back on my wrists.Continued on the next page
