Presenting at Tech Crunch Disrupt today is one company determined to ween executives from 30 year old presentation software to something more modern and mobile. SlideIdea is a presentation app, designed for tablets, that makes slide presentation creation easy and mouseless.
In a written interview with the company's founder and CEO, Jason Li, I learned more about the vast user market for such a product.
Andre Bourque: Who's going to buy this, and why?
Jason Li: There are more than 500 million PowerPoint users today. This means half a billion speakers are using traditional software designed over 20 years ago. Unfortunately, these traditional presentation tools are not designed for the advances in mobile and cloud technology. Presentation creators are limited to the least engaging, least intuitive, and most time consuming presentation applications.
Bourque: What makes SlideIdea unique?
Li: SlideIdea, unlike other presentation software, is designed to accommodate the advances in mobile and cloud technology. The company has differentiated its product with three arguably unique features including: interactive presentations, extremely smart widgets that allow creators to focus less on design, and more on content, and the fact that the app was designed entirely for mobile devices.
Your audience can interact with your presentation by participating in polls, sending questions/comments, or providing feedback using their own mobile device. Each SlideIdea presentation is provided a 5-digit ID code. Your audience can connect to the presentation by simply visiting the SlideIdea web portal (www.sld.im) on their mobile device and then entering the ID code. Once connected, your audience becomes synchronized with presentation slides and can follow along, interact, and engage.
Rather than imported desktop-mouse functionality, SlideIdea offers an interface specifically designed for tablets. SlideIdea uses ‘smart widgets’ and touch/swipe gestures for quick slide creation. Smart widgets allow the creator to focus more on their content and less on design. Additionally, always-updating templates are available for download on the SlideIdea cloud server.
Designed for Mobility
From its inception, SlideIdea was designed to accommodate the advances in mobile and cloud technology. So users don’t have to recreate work, SlideIdea can convert previously made PPT or PDF presentations. SlideIdea users can wirelessly switch between presentations created on different tablets, thus eliminating the reliance that presenters have on USB sticks. Using AirPlay, speakers can present slides wirelessly from their tablet thus eliminating the restrictions of stationed presentations.
Bourque: Okay, what's something really unique about it?
Li: SlideIdea users can utilize their smartphone to function as their own remote.
Bourque: Was there an “ah-ha” business concept moment you had? Li: There were two, actually, that inspired SlideIdea. As a teacher and serial entrepreneur, I have lots of experience creating and presenting slides and it still takes me a substantial amount of time and effort to create new presentations. That needed to be addressed.
Additionally, very few presentation tools take advantage of the advancements in mobile and cloud technology other than how they render. These two problems helped inspire SlideIdea.
Bourque: What can users expect, to be released soon, that hasn’t been announced, and is exclusive news to Technorati?
Li: We're happy too have the first announcement of our app's availability now on iTunes. Additionally, every feature in this version of SlideIdea is free for all users.
