We've previously written about Microsoft's plans to serve up its long-popular Office system for use on the Apple mobile iOS platform, as well as viable, virtual and cloud-based alternatives which will suit in the short term.

Apparently there continues to be a slow leak of information for those waiting excitedly for a formal Office for the iPad release, as news magazine The Daily just got a bit of a scoop.

According to tech site SlashGear, The Daily has put hands on a device with the app installed, running it through its paces. Additionally, The Daily has learned that the app will soon be sent up the Apple App Store chain for final approval for sale.

The new Office app is said to have a look and feel similar to the newly re-released One Note app Microsoft has updated for the Android and iOS devices. The app looks clean, and definitely takes advantage of a mobile device's touch-screen functionality.

In addition to a free-standing app, it is assumed that Microsoft will leverage its cloud-enabled Office 365 virtual work, storage and sharing space to allow app users to create, store and share Microsoft Office documents online.

Those awaiting the pending release of a Windows 8-based slate can learn a lot about how they'll be working with their Office documents (and Office 365) when the iOS version is released.

For now, fingers crossed (again)....
