Yammer, Office Ties to Strengthen this Year
I wrote recently about the gradual integration of Yammer into the Microsoft social business machine, after it emerged that Yammer staff are now reporting to managers at Microsoft.
The integration took a further step this week as Microsoft quietly released a press release highlighting the integration of Yammer with SkyDrive Pro and Office Web Apps by the summer of this year.
"SkyDrive Pro was previewed at the recent SharePoint Conference, and Yammer is implementing it as the underlying platform for file storage. In addition, Yammer is enhancing the ability to preview and edit files directly within Yammer feeds using Office Web Apps. The combination of these capabilities will dramatically enhance a user’s ability to create, collaborate, share and discover content within Yammer. These enhancements are planned for availability in summer 2013."
If you're not aware, SkyDrive Pro is what Microsoft call their SharePoint Workspace product. Amongst other things, the platform allows users to store and collaborate on documents, including of course everything from the Office suite.
From March 1st however, Microsoft will be offering Yammer and SharePoint packages at a new price point. In addition to packaging the two products together for pricing purposes, there will also be a single user logon, shared document management capabilities and feed aggregation.
The integration should be complete roughly a year after Microsoft bought Yammer for $1.2 billion back in June last year. At the time Microsoft mentioned integrating Yammer with Skype as well as Office and SharePoint. That merger is still yet to occur, but it's a logical next step so watch this space.
