Apple recently unveiled the 2010 version of the iPod Touch, and the amount of technology packed into the tiny gadget is staggering to say the least. I was considering the purchase of an iPad in the next few weeks but I am reconsidering and looking at the new iPod Touch instead.

Even though Apple considers the iPad and iPod Touch to be targeted towards completely different markets, for the most part the two devices can perform the same tasks.  There are some distinct differences, however, that might sway a user to choose the iPod Touch over the iPad. Here is a high-level comparison of the differences between the iPad and iPod Touch 2010:

iPad:

  • 9.7-inch display with 132 pixels per inch (PPI)
  • 3G wireless option available
  • Digital compass
  • GPS built-in (in 3G models)
  • Built-in speaker and microphone
  • 9-10 hour battery life
  • Additional office apps only available for the iPad

iPod touch 2010:

  • 3.5 inch screen with 326 pixels per inch (PPI) Retina display
  • Highly portable
  • Front and Rear Cameras
  • HD Video Recording
  • Three-axis gyro -detects motion more accurately
  • 7-8 hour battery life

For me, there are three major advantages of the 4th Generation iPod Touch over the current iPad. The first is the very high-quality Retina display which displays 326 pixels per inch (PPI) as opposed to the iPad's 132 PPI display.

Secondly, the dual cameras allow the iPod Touch to use Apple's new FaceTime application that is also available in the iPhone 4G. The FaceTime application is an open standard so if it becomes highly popular, I can see other video conferencing solutions such as Skype to integrate with the app. Also, the ability to shoot high-quality 720p video is a key factor in my mind.
