In a world dominated by phones and pads (tablets) alike, it was hard to choose which one of these gadgets was quintessential for on-the-go professionals. And while owning the best of both worlds was a costly affair, hiding behind the words 'necessity' and 'luxury' made men want for more. In steps ASUS with a reasonable combination of a pad and smartphone, dubbed the Padfone!

A Padfone is just what the name suggests — a combination of a pad and a phone, albeit in the form of two different physical devices with the latter docked inside the former, giving it some unique utility that just makes you want one.

ASUS announced this unique multipurpose gadget at Computex today, though only giving us a mockup to satisfy our quench with the actual device still in hiding and hopefully readying to cross our expectations with some 'big plans' up its (ASUS') sleeve. What are the big plans? A Christmas launch with Google's latest Ice Cream Sandwich on board. Though ASUS' Benson Lin didn't openly admit the presence of Google's latest 3.4 goodness, he didn't leave us with any doubts either when he said that you can't launch a smartphone with Honeycomb as the OS. Huzzah!

Dwelling deep into the Padfone, the smartphone seems to be only smart aspect of this combo, with the 'pad' part of it acting only as a display, a set of speakers, an extended battery, and an I/O extender, which doesn't work by itself. ASUS also assured us there will be other functionality enabled by the tablet panel that will enhance the Padfone's value, but didn't chose to disclose more on it.Quick Glance at Padfone

  • Padfone is a tablet which docks a smartphone inside, making it a deadly combination of the two
  • The device consists of a 4.3-inch smartphone docked inside a 10.1-inch tablet
  • The device will run on Google's Android OS (Ice Cream Sandwich as we expect it to be)
