Microsoft Too Much in the Pink, Ruin Sidekicks Forever?
Microsoft, never a stone's throw from an attempt by insiders and outsiders alike to paint it as an unseemly behemoth simultaneously sinister and sloppy, received the full stoning from sources at its Danger acquisition and elsewhere as the loss of user information from Sidekicks nationwide continued to shame the global software beast.
Users started losing the information in earnest last weekend and then, in many cases, unwittingly lost their last copy of their phone numbers, pictures, messages, etc. when they reset their Sidekicks to attempt to fix the problem as no working backups existed in most cases. The Sidekicks erased their local version and reached out to the cloud for the vital info and found only an ironically cloud-free day.
AppleInsider gathered comments from current and former employees that covered the gamut of possible reasons for the seemingly inexplicable loss of immense amounts of data without backup recovery being feasible.
Was it hubris? Was it a desire to use MSFT-only products on all projects? Was it jealous infighting between groups, including the pre-existing Zune-esque "Pink" team? One person even insisted on intentional sabotage, though the Beastie Boys apparently could not be reached for confirmation.
Refunds are being issued and begging for forgiveness has commenced, especially by T-Mobile. However, current Sidekick owners that feel burned by the failure of cloud computing might want to consider a more reliable model for their next purchase.
