Official Gmail App Available for iOS devices, Missing Notifications

I had to do a double-take when I saw that searching the iTunes App Store today, not only brought GarageBand for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, but also an official Gmail app from Google! If there's one thing I've had a problem with using iOS' native 'Mail' app, it's the lack of functionality for gmail accounts. Now, with a fully functional Gmail app developed by Google for iOS, I feel much better about using Gmail.
The new Gmail app is version 1.0.1, so we should expect to see a few updates and enhancements shortly as more users report any issues or bugs with the app. That said, upon installing the Gmail app and opening it for the first time, you'll likely see an error message. The message reads in part,"no valid APS environment". After testing the app on my iPad 2, and a colleague on the iPhone 4 (both using iOS 5), we both received the same message, and noticed that new emails received are not displaying any notifications both in the notification center drop down, nor on the Gmail icon bubble itself. That is a major issue, and will likely get fixed very soon.
The Gmail app otherwise works great, and offers the following features;
- Read your mail with threaded conversations
- Organize your mail by archiving, labeling, starring, deleting, and reporting spam
- Keep track of important messages with priority inbox
- Auto-complete contact names as you type
- Send and receive attachments
- Search through all your mail
Grab it from the iTunes App Store here.
