Old domains on the internet are in for some big competition now as the Global Internet Regulators meet that was held in Singapore a couple of days ago arrived at a final decision regarding the rules of expanding top level generic domains. New domain offerings like .nyc, .music, .coke, .law etc. are making their way on the internet and are expected to be implemented on various websites by late next year.

Chairman of ICANN`s board of directors, Peter Dengate Thrush said, "Today's decision will usher in a new Internet age.We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration." This creative idea of having suffixes related to the brand names had its presence for a long time at the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) but due to several complexities faced in revamping the internet domain structure at a global level, ICANN started developing and implementing this idea at a slow and steady pace.

It was way back in 2000 when the organization had decided to expand their domain name system and had only come up with few choicy domains that also included the highly controversial .xxx domain. ICANN has now come up with a plan that will probably accept a humongous amount of applications for registering new domains infact many organizations have disclosed their proposed applications already such as .paris, .nyc, Hitachi and Canon to name a few.

Applications are expected to be considered by ICANN starting this November or December and the new domains should make their way in the internet market by July 2012. This movement from ICANN can prove to be of a big gain for corporates and other organizations to safegurad their interests and brand value online. At the same time, this process may end up being time consuming and irritating. You could wonder if multiple applicants compete for a single domain and if ICANN treats them all equal, we could very well be having an auction that could end up feeding ICANN with millions.

How far do you people think is this new concept brought forward by ICANN going to succeed. I personally feel that it may end up as one huge mess of unnecessary domain names. I still think that the existing domains are more than enough and have a uniform approach, i may be wrong but thats my viewpoint on this matter.
