Google Discontinues Some Services
At the end of November, Google closed a few more services. These are the one’s that were not fairing very well.
- Google Bookmarks list
- Google Friend Connect
- Google Gears
- Google Wave
- Knol
Google Bookmarks List: This was a bookmarking site by Google, it will be closed on December 19th.
Google Friend Connect: This will be replaced by the Google+ Places, although it will be available until March 2012
Google Gears: This shall close in December 2011. It will no longer work in Gmail and calander.
Google Wave: This service shall be a read only service from January and eventually closed three months later.
Knol: Knol initially got really popular with article writers, shall now be closed as of April 2012.
Archives from knol shall still be available and you can download your knols and migrate them. Mid next year, knolls will not be available, but you can download and export them.
So, many services are due to be discontinued from Google. May be it’s best to do so.
These are all services that either did not do as well as expected, or were integrated into some other popular service. And now since Google+ is gaining popularity as Google’s social media site, it is indeed a good move to scrape all the unnecessary services.
