Google CEO Eric Schmidt has said that the Chrome operating system (Chrome OS, as opposed to Chrome the browser) being developed by the company is on schedule, and that it should be released sometime in the second half of the year. Schmidt's comments came at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit recently.

Announced last summer, Chrome OS is being developed, at least initially, for use on netbooks and other devices on the lower end of the power scale. It will be small, lightweight and quick to start up, and while it may not run programs like MS Office, most traditional computer-based apps will be available via the cloud (like, uh, Google Docs).

Google has already shown that they can develop a fairly rockin' OS.  In late 2008 they released Android for cell phones, an OS which has been steadily gaining ground on Apple's iPhone.

So while thus far Windows has been the dominant OS on netbooks, with Linux variants running second, that may well change once Chrome gets released, particularly when looking at devices in the lower end of the market.

And so the big G marches on, looking to be a part of every aspect of every human's every move.
