The consumer computer model would be affordable enough that one would be willing to replace a it by the time support was desperately needed. And Apple was doing the same thing but with a higher priced model offering a longer life cycle. The bottom line was that the user or consumer was not dictating the rules. Those who relied on computing output required standards such as MS Word or Excel. Those who sold computing locked you into an upgrade path that guaranteed their revenue stream. This all meant that innovation was about bigger or faster.

So why is IT losing control? Access to the Internet became fast enough that nontraditional innovators like Google showed us that there were alternatives to accomplishing computing tasks.

Near pervasive access to the Internet allowed us to trust it, enough that we allow it to be our file system. And now we have devices like the iPad that validate that simpler is better. IT is being forced to embrace this adoption of consumer technology and it is best that we IT’ers accept this rather then fight it.
