Not-quite-right on the heels of Amazon and Google's entry into the very spacious cloud computing space, Microsoft confirmed Tuesday that they will launch a cloud computing service called Azure come January 1, 2010.

It's not the first investment in the cloud for Microsoft.  In fact, they recently announced a planned research center in Taiwan focused on cloud computing.  Also, Azure itself has been on the drawing board for over a year, having laid out the foundations for the service at PDC 2008; Microsoft had hoped to release Azure commercially by PDC 2009 but came up just short.

Users will get free run of Azure in January before the payment system drops in February 1st.
