Microsoft and the State of New York announced the expansion of the Elevate America program into New York State this morning.

The program will provide free computer training vouchers to 71,000 displaced workers, giving unemployed New York State workers a way to get basic training in computer and technology skills.

Predictably, the training focuses on the use of programs like Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Power Point, but given the fact that these are standard packages in most major companies, this is hardly a strike against it. Plus, the basic training in e-mail an internet use is useful in any corporate environment.

The elevate program is already active in seven states, with voucher distribution currently going on in an additional six. New York State is the latest to join with Microsoft on the project.
