I suppose this could have happened sooner if, say, Vista hadn't been such a disaster. But Microsoft has announced that as of July 13 of this year, they will no longer support Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), though SP3 will still be supported.

Released originally in August of 2001, XP is still the standard operating system used in thousands of corporate networks around the world, though SP2 is showing its age. While still used in many environments, it has more security issues than SP3 and by ending support for it, Microsoft may be hoping to not only push people to a new Windows product, but end some issues with infected corporate PC networks.

Microsoft has made no announcement concerning when they will discontinues support for XP entirely.
