SSD Storage Faces Doubtful Future
Solid State Drives (SSDs) have many attractive qualities, such as fast access times, low power consumption and light weight/small size when compared to traditional magnetic media. We see them in notebooks and ultrabooks, and they are making inroads into some areas of Enterprise storage.
However, there is a cloud on the horizon; recent studies based upon the current flash memory technology show that SSD will not scale well and will hit a brick wall around the 16TB level. While that sounds like a huge amount of storage (and it is), we also know that storage can be quickly gobbled up even with today's levels of usage.
The issue is that latency and data errors in SSDs increase with storage a capacity, and extrapolating the numbers indicate that the technology becomes nonviable at the sort of storage levels referred to above.
There are other technologies waiting in the wings, such as so-called "3D" memory, which has been in development for some time. It's not commercially available yet, but as the SSD problem is not expected to become critical for 10 years or so, we should be able to come up with a workable solution.
