The purpose of the IC3K, 3rd International Joint Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management, is to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners on the areas of Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management. The conference accomplished this by bringing together three co-located conferences: The International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval (KDIR), The International Conference on Knowledge Engineering and Ontology Development (KEOD), and the International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information Sharing (KMIS).

The conference was sponsored by the Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication (INSTICC) and held at the beautiful campus of the Université Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne, in Lieusaint, Paris, France.

The following recognized leaders gave keynote addresses at the conference:

  • Jay Liebowitz, University of Maryland University College, U.S.A.
Title: Knowledge Management and e-Learning: Putting Theory into Practice
  • Carole Goble, University of Manchester, U.K.
    Title: Accelerating Scientists' Knowledge Turns
  • Mayer Aladjem, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel
Title: Probabilistic Modeling, Projection Pursuit and Blind Source Separation
  • Guus Schreiber, VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Title: Principles for Knowledge Engineering on the Web
  • Jan L. G. Dietz, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands
    Title: Intellectually Managing Organized Complexity

The keynote speakers were all outstanding in their presentation and content. They all clearly showed that the semantic web is not some theoretical idea but rather a practical approach to capturing and reusing knowledge.

For my part, I attended the keynote presentations, paper presentations, and participated in the Special Session on Enterprise Ontology. I also had the opportunity to present a paper on the status of one of my current projects. Presenting my paper was a great way to get feedback.

On Thursday evening, many of the conference attendees took part in a tour by night in Paris followed by dinner at the Restaurant "Le Train Bleu". The food was excellent. The restaurant reflects the beautiful and ornate architecture of Paris. The relaxing beauty of the art stands in contrast to the complex computer-driven knowledge discussions held at the conference.

As an Enterprise Architect, it was clear that the semantic web is getting closer. The standard language for capturing ontologies, OWL, is playing a significant role in providing a way for researchers to capture and share knowledge. Tools are emerging to support the management of knowledge through sharing by mapping ontologies into new areas of application.

The conference next year will be held in Barcelona, Spain. Those that are serious about understanding the state of knowledge capture and sharing should plan to attend.
