Most Households Now Own HDTVs--Is 3D Next?
According to a study by the Leichtman Research Group, over half of American households—61%, in fact, up from only 12% five years ago—now own at least one high-definition TV. The survey also found that 26% own more than one HDTV.
The survey also asked about 3DTV, and found that, while an interest is there, it's getting off to a relatively slow start. Less than 1% of U.S. households currently own a 3D-capable TV, according to the survey, although 8% are "very interested" in purchasing one.
"With modest consumer demand for 3D-capable TVs, the potential growth of 3DTV will rely on a continued ‘push' of 3DTV by manufacturers and retailers," said LRG president and principal analyst Bruce Leichtman in a Multichannel article.
Like many new technologies before it—HDTV, broadband, and more—widespread adoption of 3DTV, particularly by U.S. consumers, may take some time. However, the proliferation of high-definition content and HDTVs, as well as more frequent exposure to 3D content (according to the survey, 80% of consumers are aware of 3DTV), are positive indicators of a bright future for 3DTV.
