Canadian Seal Slaughter: The Senseless Murder of Millions

It has been called "Canada's Shame". Every year, thousands of baby harp seals are killed in Canada. Itis the largest slaughter of marine mammals on Earth. In the past decade, close to two million seals have been killed for their fur.

When covering an issue like this, one must first examine the facts (anything with quotation marks was cited earlier in the article":

- Fifty six percent of the exports of the Canadian Seafood Industry go to the U.S.

-The seal hunt primarily takes place in Newfoundland, the province responsible for the fourth-largest seafood export in Canada.

-Sealers earn $1.2 million from sealing. Tax payers foot the $3-5 million dollar bill for the Coast Guard to monitor the hunt. That figure doesn't even count for the travel of lobbyists, seal processing plants, and other government-funded activities related to the seal hunt.

- "97 percent of the seals killed in the past 10 years have been less than three months of age. Many of these defenseless seals did not yet know how to swim."

-"In 2001, an independent veterinary panel concluded that the seal hunt results in considerable and unacceptable suffering. They noted that in 42 percent of the seals examined there was not enough evidence of cranial injury to even guarantee unconsciousness at the time of skinning."

Call me crazy, but, I personally think there is a special circle of hell for someone who chooses to abuse poor, innocent animals. There is no excuse- those seals are NOT hurting you! There is no reason why this should be allowed. I am truly disgusted with the Canadian government. How could this be allowed? I can understand the aboriginal seal hunt because they eat the seals, use their furs, etc. However, the government regulated seal hunt is disgusting and deplorable.

Polar bears are the only ones that should be hunting seals. So, here are a few things you can do to help save seals:

Click here to sign the pledge to boycott Canadian sea food! I already signed it. So should you!

Buy one of these prints by Nigel Barker and help support the cause?

I found these online and they will definitely bring a tear to your eye:
