It used to be you could judge a book by its cover. These days with more and more eyes glued to YouTube than the shelves of a bookstore, book trailers are the next big thing in the publishing industry.

Last night, Melville House Publishing sponsored the 2010 Moby Awards honoring the best (and worst) book trailers. Maurice Gee's Going West was honored with the award for Best Big Budget/Big House Book Trailer, while Kathryn Regina's I am in the Air Right Now took home the award for Best Low Budget/Indie Book Trailer.

Dennis Cass won Best Performance by an Author for his appearance in his own Head Case trailer. Comedian Zach Galifianakis won an award for Best Cameo in John Wray's Lowboy trailer.

Finally, Patricia Rockwell was awarded the dubious honor of Least Likely Trailer to Sell the Book for her painfully grating Sounds of Murder trailer. It's pretty embarrassing to watch. Or, uh, hear, I guess?

One of my personal favorite book trailers this year was for Thomas Pynchon's stoner detective novel Inherent Vice. While nominated for the Best Cameo category (the reclusive Pynchon narrates), it didn't take home an award. But, hey,  I'm still going to share it with you, because you really can't go wrong with a Thomas Pynchon cameo.
