Solange Knowles Joins of Montreal for Jackson 5 Cover
Solange Knowles has some serious hipster cred. She's turned her famous sister and brother-in-law (ahem, Beyoncé and Jay-Z) on to Grizzly Bear, she spun records at The xx release party, and she recorded an amazing cover of "Stillness is the Move" by Dirty Projectors. Her sophomore album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams was even favorably reviewed on Pitchfork. And it was announced earlier this month that she would guest on this year's forthcoming of Montreal album.
So last night at the Highline Ballroom, should it really have surprised anyone that Solange appeared with the band? This faithful cover of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" looks like it was a blast for everyone involved. Matt Perpetua of Fluxblog who attended the show remarked that we're all "lucky to live in a time when we can have great footage of something as surprising and fun as this appear online within a matter of hours of it happening."
The other day, blogger Molly McAleer made this comparison between Solange and her sister:
Beyoncé is like the popular sister that starred in all the plays at school and Solange is like her artsy sister that smoked cigarettes and went to slam poetry competitions in parts of town that Bey wouldn’t have been seen dead in.So true. I'm on Team Solange.
