The Alaska Marine Highway is one of the most dynamic ways to see Alaska. Some would consider this route more "true" Alaska because it doesn't come with the glitz and "simulated Alaska" presentations that come with many prepackaged cruises.

During the summer, the route gets used by tourists, locals and seasonal cannery workers who are looking for cheap transportation. Literal tent cities pop up on the back deck (and yes, they are allowed) and the full spectrum of Alaska life is represented.
