Ambulance Paramedic Accused of Sexual Assault

Mark Powell Allegedy Raped Woman in AmbulanceIn Connecticut, a paramedic was charged in the sexual assault last month of a woman who was strapped down and semi-unconscious in the back of an ambulance, according to police. Mark Powell, age 49, was charged with first-degree sexual assault and unlawful restraint after he turned himself over to authorities on Thursday.

Hamden Police Captain Ronald Smith said the 22-year-old woman received emergency medical treatment after receiving a head injury on Christmas Day and was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital. During the transportation by ambulance, the alleged victim was strapped to a stretcher and sexually assaulted, according to the victim. The Police Captain said the women waited three days to report the incident because she was embarrassed and afraid.

Mr. Powell has worked for American Medical Response as a part-time paramedic since 2006, and full-time since 2006, according to the New Haven Register. Mr. Powell has also servied as a volunteer firefighter in the area since 1982, according to the New Haven Register.

According to the American Medical Response statement, Mr. Powell was been placed on administrative leave. Powell was released on $25,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on January 19th.
