Caffeine Is Our Friend

There's no secret that the world is 'hooked' on caffeinated beverages. The most popular of them is the traditional cup of coffee (otherwise known as 'Joe'). The following infographic gives us some details as to how much caffeine is actually in our preferred beverages, how much we injest from them, and what it can do to us because of our addiction.

To give you a little history briefly, caffeine, which is a psychoactive stimulant drug, was discovered way back in 1819 by Friedrich Ferdinand Runge (German chemist). Since 1819, caffeine amounts to an estimated 120,000 tons of consumption each year. Boy do we love this stuff! It's like catnip for humans!

Believe it or not, caffeine actually makes us jitter after injesting 300mg of the stuff, or consuming a Starbucks Grande (16oz) HouseBlend coffee. That effect on us is called 'Caffeine Intoxication', that's right...in otherwords, Drunk on Caffeine.

Most surprisingly is that there is far less caffeine in a can of Coca-Cola than there is in your average cup of home brewed coffee, far less...in fact about half. It's the sugar in the Coca-Cola that makes the difference. A traditional espresso has about 77mg of caffeine, where a large McDonald's coffee has 145mg. No matter how you slice it though, the caffeine you partake in will stay in your body for about 4.9 hours. Which should be an alarm for someone like me who drinks about 4 8oz cups of Starbucks a day. Which means that by the time I'm onto my third cup, I may be 'Drunk on caffeine'. That will last me until about 8pm at night, since I'll have 2 more cups until then, dosing myself with another 340mg of caffeine which will finally be out of my body by around 8pm. I know, I know...I've already had 3 cups of the stuff as you can probably tell.
