Canadian Jury Finds Three Afghan Family Members Guilty of Honor Killings
According to reports, a Canadian jury allowed the rule of criminal law to trump religious law of an Afghan immigrant couple, 58-year old Mohammad Shafia, his 42-year-old wife, Tooba Yahya and their 21-year-old son, Hamed. The jury found that the three members of the Afghan family, convinced of their righteousness, killed their four female relatives for bringing "dishonor" upon the family. What was the terrible humiliation and shame brought to Shafia, Yahya and Hamed? The women dressed "indecently." One dated a Christian man and whether one, two or four, someone used the Internet.
In front of the jury, and now in the eyes of much of the world, shame, indeed, did fall on the heads of the family. But it wasn't the shame the family anticipated. It was the shame associated with their guilt and it encompassed the horror of others questioning how they could exact these "cold-blooded, shameful murders." It was the shame brought to them by their galactic selfishness with no thought for the ones killed.and no respect for the laws of the country in which they made their living and ate their bread.
Three of the women, sisters, were drowned, as well as Shafia's first wife in an elaborately staged "joy-ride" gone wrong. The bodies of Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, Geeti, 13, and Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, were discovered in a car submerged in a canal in Kingston, Ontario, on June 30, 2009. The family had stopped in Kingston while returning home to Montreal from Niagara Falls, a pleasant, rewarding trip for the women to enjoy before their untimely and fatal "accident."
The prosecution was adamant about the murdered women's traits that caused their demise, saying that they were "strong, vivacious and freedom-loving." Ontario Superior Court Judge Robert Maranger was no less adamant about the family's self-interest and hypocrisy. "It is difficult to conceive of a more heinous, more despicable, more honorless crime. The apparent reason behind these cold-blooded, shameful murders was that the four completely innocent victims offended your completely twisted concept of honor ... that has absolutely no place in any civilized society"Continued on the next page
