They are just now coming to the age where they can understand the importance and value of giving back.  They are old enough to see that giving to others is so much more than just buying a present. They are old enough to begin to understand that they are fortunate and should give back whenever possible. These are tough lessons for young children, but lessons that need to be learned nonetheless.  The holiday season just provided a good backdrop to begin teaching them these important ideas.

Perhaps we can donate our time this holiday season.  Maybe we can donate coats or toys to those that need them.  There are organizations that need volunteers, churches that open their doors, soldiers that would enjoy a homemade gift, and other children that could use a smile or two.  The opportunities are endless.  I honestly just hope they understand the point of it all.  I just hope they 'get it.'  I hope that by the end of the season my children will have a better understanding of giving back and a better appreciation for the things they have.
