Elizabeth Edwards Funeral Protest? Religious Right? No, Religious Wrong
The wackos from Westboro are at it again, wackos being people who think that their own bigotry comes from God, and Westboro being the Westboro Baptist Church, under the leadership of Fred Phelps, whose unofficial motto these days is “God Hates Fags.”
If you’re a regular news-watcher, you’ve seen this group of zealots, and by “zealots” I mean “morons,” gathered at funerals of soldiers and gays (particularly gay victims of hate crimes). As a child I was taught that there are four things polite people don’t discuss: money, politics, religion, and sex. I’m not very polite, but I tend not to share my feelings (or lack of same) on those subjects.
The Westboro Baptist Church does not need any further publicity, and I didn’t really want to write an article that would be a Google search result for that entity. But, I’ve had enough. I am a Christian. I believe in a loving God; that means a God who hates no one. Yes, it’s hard to reconcile that the God I love loves Adolph Hitler, but I believe he does. He even loves the members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.
The Huffington Post quotes from their flyer advertising action at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, “When they were visited from the Most High God with the death of their 16-year-old son [Wade, died 1996], they did not humble themselves before His mighty hand. They reared up in rage, decided they would show God who is boss, and meddled in matters of the womb, resulting in 2 more children — now motherless.” The flyer is also quoted as saying that Edwards is now a "resident of hell, where her rebellion and rage will take full flower." So much for “Judge not lest ye be judged.” Oh…and what was that other one about not throwing stones?
The congregation of Westboro Baptist Church apparently feels that God has appointed them his spokespeople. Unfortunately, they communicate with God through that old game of “telephone” kids used to play at parties, and by the time they get the message it’s totally garbled.
