Florida Congresswoman Set to Be First Elected Female Leader of Democratic Party - Page 2
Wasserman Schultz wasted no time in throwing a partisan jab at Republicans.
“All across America,” she said, “Democratic leaders are fighting hard to create jobs and boost economic recovery, deliver real education reforms that guarantee American students are able to get ahead, and further the causes of justice and equality. And all across this country, entrenched Republican forces are doing everything they can to prevent Democrats from succeeding in those goals.”
Wasserman Schultz became a member of the U.S. House in 2005. Her congressional district covers an area stretching from Fort Lauderdale to Miami Beach. She sits on two powerful congressional panels – the House Budget Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.
Before being elected to Congress, Wasserman Schultz was a Florida state senator and state representative. Wasserman Schultz, who was born in Long Island, N.Y., is a breast cancer survivor.
Wasserman Schultz is a close friend of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat who was seriously wounded in a January 2011 shooting spree at a shopping center in Tucson, Ariz. Six people were killed in the attack and 13 people, including Giffords, were injured.
