What did I do? I accepted the requests. I customized each former student to where they can see everything I post on my wall, but they will not see what someone else posts on my wall.

I lead a morally sound life, am a highly qualified educator, and I am seen as a role model to young, impressionable students. I realize no matter how vigorous we are in customizing privacy settings, if someone looks hard enough, something could be taken out of context. If there is ever a question, I utilize it as a teachable moment.

The bottom line?

The bottom line is teachers need to set a positive example, both on and off Facebook. Period. If I have a frustrating day, I am not going to slam students on my Facebook wall. I might talk my husband's ear off or punch a pillow, but in the end, I know I am being watched.

For friending my former students, it is my right, my choice, and my way of maintaining a positive influence in the lives of students I can't wait to see graduate someday! For them, my role changed. Current students, I still won't friend you, sorry, I am your teacher!
