Girls Aren't "Too Pretty To Do Homework"
Recently, I came across a picture of a shirt that offended me. If you're curious, this is what it said:
Now, I know this isn't new news. However, these are issues that need to be brought to our attention. First, anyone who says that girls are "too pretty to do homework" is a moron. Apparently, this shirt is being sold at J.C. Penny's and tells little girls that it's not attractive to be smart.
Some of you may think this shirt is "cute" or "funny". Here's a big newsflash: it's not. I am furious that shirts like this exist. It is targeted to young girls between the ages of seven and sixteen. These are developing young women who are at their most vulnerable. This shirt is truly hideous, deplorable, and too stupid for words. I am offended.
Women are a minority in many fields such as math, science, and technology. To me, this is sad. Women are FULLY CAPABLE of being intelligent and changing the world. Condoleeza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and many others are in government kicking ass and taking names. Some of my editors here at Technorati are women. I have encountered too many smart women who prove this shirt wrong. Did I mention that all of them are drop dead gorgeous?
It's already hard enough to be a woman in "a man's world". Constantly, we are being told that we can't "have it all". Sure, it's harder on women to raise children, have careers, and be wives. However, it is possible. I turn twenty one in about a month and still firmly believe that I can get married, have a career and possibly have children. Despite being one of the most developed countries in the world, there is still a war on women in the United States. Work-family conflict is higher in the United States than anywhere in the world. The United States has no paid maternity leave laws, paternity leave is almost unheard of, no paid sick leave, no limits on mandatory overtime, and a plethora of other issues. However, this isn't the fault of feminism.
