Introducing a Heroine Worth Watching

It has been 75 years since Disney's first fairy tale was released (if you're curious which one I'm referring to, it's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves). Finally, we now have a princess who's nothing like the norm. Pixar's new animated film release "Brave" features Meridia as the main character, a fiery redhead who strives for her independence.

Wow... it's taken us this long to show our young girls (and boys) what a strong-willed woman who doesn't need a husband to survive looks like?! Five years after its inception, the designers and animators have made sure they've covered everything from her look to the colors they used around her. Even capturing Meridia's essence with wild, scraggly, fiery, curly red hair is how detailed they got in defining her character.

For decades women have been fighting for equality, to have their voices heard, and to have the wide spectrum of their skills and abilities portrayed in film. Thank you Pixar for stepping up the challenge of adding dimension to what women bring to the table. Not all of us are sitting at home in our ivory towers waiting for our prince to come along on his steed.

PS - Am also happy to note that one of the film's two directors is also a woman. Thanks for doing us empowered women proud, Brenda Chapman!
