Kardashian Kard Deserves a Critique with More Substance, Less Style
After watching shows like HBO’s Entourage, you may find yourself pining for the ability to live the lavish life of a Hollywood celebrity. While most people can’t afford to spend like the rich and famous, anyone can now spend with them, or at least a piece of plastic with their name and picture on it. That’s right; you can now make purchases with your very own Kardashian Prepaid MasterCard.
The Kardashian-branded card has received significant criticism since its Nov. 9 release, with much of the negativity coming as a result of the widely held belief that the Kardashians are inadequate financial icons for America’s youth. The card, critics maintain, will obviously be detrimental to kids because they are the audience most likely to both watch E’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians and seek a prepaid card. However, not only does this criticism assume drone-like pop-culture allegiance from kids, but it also ignores older demographics and whatever utility the card actually might have.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the ratings for the Keeping Up With the Kardashians season four finale and season five premiere rank first and second respectively in E’s history among adults 18-34, adults 18-49, women 18-34 and women 18-49. Younger demographics were not mentioned, seemingly indicating that the show’s audience trends higher than people would expect or care to admit. Thus, perhaps the child-safety criticism of the Kardashian Kard is not as significant as might appear on the surface. Besides, you must be at least 18 years old to apply for the card.
In addition, if the Kardashian Kard was the best option available in the debit card market, would it truly matter that it bears the name of a family famous for reality television? While the Kardashians are not financial role models, could they not begin to garner that reputation by providing young people with an affordable, easy-to-use prepaid card that would teach them how to responsibly use money?
Therefore, true evaluation of the Kardashian Kard is necessary before any final judgment of it can be rendered. To accomplish this, we compared the Kardashian Kard to the Green Dot® Gold Prepaid Visa® Card, one of the most popular prepaid cards currently offered, in terms of five important fees that serve as apt representatives of the expenses users face with each.Continued on the next page
