Leadership Development and Women’s History Month

The standards have changed. It used to be that talent, determination, and chutzpa were the gold standard. Today, being dumb and not necessarily blond makes the cut.
Hey, this is Women’s History Month and a time to celebrate the advances of women worldwide. I decided to look at those that dominate the headlines to make sense out of how we see amazing women in today’s world.
It seems we have taken a deep tumble down a very slippery slope in who gets the nod of notice and why.
It used to be that women actually DID something to be recognized. Take Barbra Streisand, for example; a great voice that gets in your blood when she belts out a tune. And she is a trailblazer in her industry producing, directing, acting, singing and winning award after award.
Nowadays, when leadership development programs are sliced and diced to see who is making headway and headlines in the women’s leadership department, we get names like Kim Kardashian and Snooki.
What do they do that is unique and different? Hummmmm.
They are the result of that ugly monster, reality television. They sleep around, get married and divorced in the blink of an eye, get pregnant (at least that’s the buzz about 24 year old Snooki).
Are these women trailblazers? Are they talented? Do they fit the bill for being GUTSY and making a difference in this world of ours?
Would you want YOUR daughter to model their behavior?
Come on planet, we can do better.
