Leadership Mindset Shift: Engaging Women 21st Century Style

Have you noticed? Good women leaving the high powered business sector have a theme. They say “It’s just not worth it”. And these are super educated individuals who have the smarts to make a difference. So, what’s going on?

First thoughts would be around the fact that most are moms who want to be able to get to their kids’ soccer games. Research shows this is not the case. These women are motivated and great multi-taskers. They can handle the pressure of family, friends, fashion, and focus at work.

The “it’s just not worth it” is about priorities. Wait! I just said the research indicates that it is not a home/work issue. Then what is it?

These women are taking a stand about their values. When they say “It’s not worth it” they are forming that statement based on the question, “What really matters?” Now, stop for a minute and answer this yourself. Just right off the top of your head; jot down a few sentences as you ask yourself what really matters to you.

Back to the women executives who say there is a crisis of values in the workplace. The old model of compete to the top, dog eat dog, look out for number one, these just don’t cut it for sustained healthy, positive work settings.

These women say it is exhausting to continually fight your way to job success. While the word collaboration is bandied about, in reality it is not utilized as a way of working together. There is a clash of values going on and it is about patterns of behavior.

In “Don’t Bring It to Work” there are examples of how patterns from the past get in the way of change. How the deep, often unconscious desire to keep things the way they are undermines newer and better ways of solving problems.
