Kindergarten students in Auburn, Maine will be using the iPad 2 next school year for learning the alphabet, drawing and much more. The school district spent about $200,000 purchasing 285 iPad 2s for each student and teacher in the classrooms, along with insurance and educational apps.
The decision was made after teachers who owned iPads saw significant improvements when using educational apps to help kindergarteners who had previous trouble learning the alphabet.

School officials in Auburn hope the iPad will boost literacy rates from 62 percent to 90 percent in two years.

The state has had a successful laptop program, but educators say that since the iPad is smaller, lighter, easier to navigate and less expensive, it offers more advantages.
