Little Boys in the Big Boys' Bathroom - Page 2
I know I'm pushing the boundaries of what some people are comfortable with. I've seen boys who look to be about my kids' age run out of the mens' restroom to their waiting mothers. Our local YMCA's guideline states that children over the age of 6 should use gender-appropriate restrooms. At this point, no one has ever made a fuss about seeing them in the ladies' restroom. They're obviously little boys, and somewhat small for their age. But it won't be long before we start getting some raised eyebrows and dirty looks. I've seen them directed at a lady who takes her son into the YMCA family changing room to change for swimming lessons. He looks to be about ten or eleven. I think he may have a learning disability, but the disapproving-starers just see a big boy and wonder why he's there.
So how old is too old? I really don't know. I don't know what age my boys will be before I feel comfortable letting them use the men's room on their own, but until I do, I'll be ignoring the stares or meeting them with a "My sons' well being trumps your disapproval" stare of my own.
