The words leave me speechless. I know this could be the story of a woman in Argentina, Chile, Ethiopia, China or even much closer – a mother working the strawberry fields in Watsonville or Brentwood. When I see the store fruit hails from South America, I often wonder how long ago it was picked, but never who harvested the bounty or how their most basic needs are dependent on my $3 purchase, which if not eaten in time, gets tossed.
No question – we women won the lottery simply by being born in America. It has given me pause to think more critically about my everyday purchases and appreciate all the simple and expected good that comes with having clean water, abundant food and opportunities to carve out a life of beauty.
