TEDxWomen Part 3 - Rebirth
The third segment of the TEDxWomen conference held December 1, 2011 at the Paley Center for Media in both New York City and Los Angeles was ReBirth. This very enlightening segment was curated and hosted by Jane Fonda.
ReBirth - How extended health, longevity, and an untapped potential is redefining women in their third act.
We are living on average 34 years longer than our great grandparents did. but our culture has not come to terms with this. Many people today are taking a new look at the 3rd act, the last 3 decades of life. This is just as significant an act, and as different from middle age as adolescence. Think of age as potential. Now that she is in the middle of her own 3rd act, she realizes that she has never been happier. Picasso once said, "It takes a long time to become young." 1/3 of our 3rd act is genetic. 2/3 we control. The universal law of entropy effects everything except the human spirit.
Dr. Laura Carstensen - Founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity.
People are living longer. Longer lives can and will improve the quality of life at all ages. The increase in life expectancy is the remarkable product of our culture. The more we learn about aging, we see that a sweeping downward course is largely inaccurate. Older people are happier than middle aged and young people. Stress, worry and anger all decrease with age. Older people are more likely than younger people to have mixed emotions. Older people deal with sadness better than young. Older people can deal with injustice with compassion and not despair.
Dr. Michelle Warren - Founder and medical director of the Center for Menopause, hormonal disorders and women's health.
Why are hormones so controversial? Study overemphasized problems and underemphasized the benefits. Misconception - hormones cause breast cancer. There was never any scientific proof of this. Estrogen alone shows no incidence of breast cancer. Myth - hormones cause heart attacks. Not true at all. Estrogen can in fact protect your heart. Myth – It is possible to have normal sexual activity without hormones. Note true. Vaginas age without hormones. Can be cured with local estrogen in pill, ring or cream. Myth - bio-identical hormones are safer. Not true. There is a generation of women suffering because they are scared to take hormones.
Dr. Mehmet Oz - TV show host and cardiac surgeon.
Physical activity is very important for keeping your brain young. The biggest life adjustments that will affect aging are :
- Blood pressure
- Stress control
- No cigarettes or toxins
- Exercise (30 min a day)
- Waist size, not weight, better predicts your health. Waist size should be less than half your height.
- Muscle vs. Fat tissue. Muscle burns at least 3x more calories than fat. Don't run faster on treadmill. Increase incline. Weight lifting more important because muscle so important. It will keep burning calories after you are done.
