Thanksgiving Dinner Costs Increases 13% in 2011
While it may be possible for some people to purchase an entire Thanksgiving meal for one dollar, chances are that you're going to be paying 13% more for your turkey dinner in 2011 according to the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBA).
The AFBA priced all the classic ingredients for a family of 10 for a Thanksgiving dinner which included cranberries, pumpkin pie, stuffing, turkey plus all the basic trimmings (sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, relish tray of carrots & celery and whip cream) and found that the cost came to $49.20. That was a 13% increase in price from last year's total of $43.47 for the same ingredients.
Even with the increased price, the total cost for a Thanksgiving meal still comes out to be just under $5 per person for the meal, or less than a typical fast food restaurant meal. The majority of that cost comes from a 16-pound turkey which increased $0.25 a pound from last year to around $1.35 per pound.
The pricing was gathered from everyday shoppers and not from super grocery shopping experts. There were a total of 141 Farm Bureau volunteer shoppers from 35 states who participated by looking for the best possible prices in their area for the ingredients on the list. They had to find the ingredients without using any promotional coupons or special deals such as spending $100 to get a free turkey. This indicates that any shopper who has an eye for grocery store bargains should be able to purchase their Thanksgiving dinner for a similar price.
