TooBigforstroller.com Controversy. Judgmental or Spot on?
A new controversy is traveling through the Internet by way of a blog. It has made its way to Good Morning America, and several parents aren’t happy. I am talking about Laura Miller’s blog titled, “TooBigForStroller.com”.
What started out as a joke among friends has now become a pretty large debate. The discussion now has a following on Facebook, and several parents are unhappy about the publicity it has gathered.
The topic of the blog is parents utilizing strollers for children who are much too old to be chauffeured. It offers pictures of parents walking strollers, or in some cases using infant carriers, with kids that should clearly be able to walk around on their own two feet. The supporters of the use of the strollers say that they are doing what is best for their children and citing that they are parents and they know best. The anti-stroller followers of the blog are stating that it isn’t teaching these children to care for themselves and could lead to laziness and obesity.
Interestingly pediatricians are inclined to agree that strollers are being overused and it could lead to a problem for our children of today. There are no official guidelines instated by the American Academy of Pediatrics, however the general consensus is that by age three children should be transitioning out of a stroller. Pediatricians have stated that overuse of a stroller could lead to lack of strengthening and conditioning. As a mother, I agree that putting my child into a stroller is easier than trying to corral him away from every touchable item known to man, however, I want him to be the strongest he can and if the stroller is going to hinder that then it is time to park it.
