Unselfish Acts of Love and Kindness

Children's book author, Mother and a God Loving Humanitarian, Stephanie Farley adds a child to her holiday wish list.

How many of us quickly change the channel when we see a child covered in flies and filth while he or she desperately searches for food? My hand is raised.

You do meet those with no moral  connection to others who make disgusting remarks such as, "If people can't afford to feed their kids, they need to stop having them."

What about those heart wrenching commercials showing an injured animal limping across the screen silently crying out for help. I change that channel too.

Surely we are not heartless or have no love to intervene, we just feel ashamed and helpless. The problem is too vast to make a difference. It's easier to ignore the issue, change the channel and forget anything is wrong.

Not for Stephanie and her family, this Holiday season they are looking into adopting a homeless child from Ethiopa.

Raising a kid these days is not cheap or easy especially with two kids already in the house."One more mouth to feed or college to save for won't be easy," says Stephanie. " Adopting a child from another country cost $30,000.00."

Coming up with this amount of money will take many sacrifices and no selfishness. You won't be able to take that cruise next year, buy the top of the line lip stick anymore but you'll be saving a child's life.

However, like Helen Keller said in one of my favorite quotes, “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”

Stephanie's story has inspired me to step back and look at how selfish I have been over the years. Think about it every time I eat a meal I do so until my belly is full. We have kids in this world who are digging in dumps and the trash hoping to eat just to survive another day.
