Do you enjoy that steaming hot coffee first thing in the morning?

So do many women who look forward to that little jolt to get their day moving.

Luckily for them, a new study indicates that a cup of coffee a day may keep the heart doctor away.

Specifically, the study, conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm revealed that women who drank one to five cups of coffee per day were associated with 22 to 25 per cent lower risk of stroke than those women who drank less than a cup of java a day. Great news for those of us who are not yet ready to call it a day on our daily cappuccino.

The study, which was comprised of 34,670 women, aged 49 to 83, spanned a 10-year period between 1998 and 2008. Of the study participants, 1,680 of them suffered a stroke during the decade that the research was conducted. Women who reported drinking anywhere from one to five cups of coffee per day had similar results, compared to those who drank less than a cup of coffee, according to researchers. Factors such as smoking, drinking, diabetes, weight or high blood pressure had no bearing on the results. The participants as well, were asked whether they were drinking decaffeinated of regular coffee and for the most part the latter was the case. Those of us who are veritable slaves to the daily dose of the sacred bean will rejoice in these findings.

This study is not the first time that coffee has been thought to be a factor in reducing the risk of a stroke. Just last year, British researchers revealed to participants of the American Stroke Association's annual stroke conference that a University of Cambridge study that followed men and women over a 12 year period indicated that those who drank coffee showed a 27 per cent lower risk of stroke than those who never touched the stuff. Similarly, another study conducted by The University Medical Center Utrecht and published online last June in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology found coffee drinkers who had two to four cups a day experienced a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease than people who drank less than two or more than four cups a day.

Great news for the coffee contingent that thrives on their daily dose of Joe.
Pass the cream and sugar.
