One limitation of this study was the small number of cancer cases identified, though it benefited that there was data for the long haul of 12 years. But a problem was the researchers' resulting inability to more thoroughly analyze subsets of cases according to cancer sites and variables.
Although obesity and related conditions such as diabetes and the metabolic syndrome have been linked with colorectal cancer, it has not been known whether the risk relates to levels of circulating insulin or glucose. Further studies will have to be conducted to gain understanding about the risk differences.
